tribulus
Tribulus is used in the Active Formula
of the
CardioTrim health
supplement line.
Tribulus a traditional Ayurvedic herb commonly known as the
“puncture vine,” has been used for centuries in Europe as a
treatment for impotence and as a stimulant to help enhance sexual
drive and performance. Tribulus has been shown to increase LH (luteinizing
hormone) production and boost testosterone levels. Tribulus exerts
its testosterone-elevating effects by stimulating an increase in LH,
which is responsible for “telling” your body to produce
testosterone. Testosterone is a vital hormone responsible for
development of secondary sexual traits, as well as increasing muscle
size and strength. As a result, Tribulus helps promote muscle size
and strength naturally, without the side-effects associated with
anabolic steroids. Tribulus has also been shown to increase energy
and stamina, and to speed muscle recovery after muscle fibers have
been broken down as a result of exercise. Finally, Tribulus is used
in various Ayurvedic medicines for the treatment of various kidney
disorders. It possesses nephroprotective and diuretic properties,
and is used to ameliorate drug-induced kidney damage.
When scientists began studying the therapeutic properties of
Tribulus terrestris, they discovered that it significantly elevated
the levels of several hormones, including testosterone, luteinizing
hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and estradiol. The
original goal was to develop a safe, natural non-hormonal treatment
for sexual deficiency and anomalies. However, its ability to boost
testosterone levels, increase muscle size and speed-up recovery from
physical stress also suggests that it may have applications to
athletes. Tribulus, a non-hormonal supplement, was shown to increase
testosterone levels without the side-effects commonly associated
with anabolic steroids. One follow-up study, conducted on healthy
men ages 28-45, showed that three doses (250 mg per dose) of
Tribulus taken throughout the day for just five days elevated
testosterone levels by 30 percent. Since testosterone promotes
protein synthesis and positive nitrogen balance, Tribulus can be
used to help boost testosterone levels, thereby increasing muscle
size and strength, as well as increasing recuperation and recovery
time from physical stress. This, together with its diuretic effect,
promotes lean body mass, which many athletes and bodybuilders are
interested in.
